Revisiting a hive of scum and villainy

Starwars.com has a great slideshow available of image quality differences between the original theatrical release of Star Wars and the 2004 DVD Special Edition (which was actually a re-special edition of sorts). You can crawl all over the web about how the upcoming Star Wars Theatrical Release DVD isn't exactly that, but it's as close as we'll ever get. Even the widescreen re-issue on VHS some years back cleaned up alot of matte lines and composite shots.

What's amazing about the comparisons is that while the Special Edition adds an overall gloss coat of polish, it's hard to ignore how good the original really was. It is a rare film that completely changes the face of cinema and its respective industries, Star Wars still holds that crown in the sense of sheer influence, and may do so indefinitely. I myself fall into the cliche of most original viewers, regarding the film as one that had a profound impact on my life. Tell me, when was the last time a movie did that?
